You were referencing Hollywood not ‘getting’ anime though, not Bebop specifically.  Slice of life, harems, the Looney Tunes style slapstick, etc. etc. don’t really lend themselves to Western storytelling.

Anime is heavily entrenched in Japanese tropes that don’t read as well in the West.  I think this accounts for some of it at least.  Secondly, the spiky hairdos always look silly.
