Calling a lady a racist is almost as bad as calling her fat. Even if it’s true, she’s not going to listen, just be really, really pissed. I’m not saying this tongue in cheek; calling me fat is one of the few things I’m tempted to punch a mofo for.

“But I don’t think it is anymore.”

Absolutely. And it’s all shielded with an almost inarguable, impenetrable “this is for the good of my children, it’s not about race” (horseshit) idea, at least nowadays.

The historical driving force here may have been female purity/fragility. But I don’t think it is anymore. Because while Female purity/fragility may have been the ideal for white motherhood in the late 19th century, I think for a long time now there’s been a different ideal: That of the fearsome “mama bear.” (Retches.)

Seriously. This article’s old (and discusses an extreme response to white women fragility) but it’s stayed with me since I read it:

Seeing her blithe comment about Emmett Till it’s quite likely you could be lynched for walking into the wrong Five And Dime. Or registering Black people to vote. Or attending church in Alabama. Etc.

Emphasis on “historical driving forces of white nationalism”. I’ve seen plenty of white nationalist propaganda that prominently feature still images of Taylor Swift, Sansa Stark or some other random white woman. It can’t be understated how the idea white female purity/fragility is perhaps the most potent fuel for

ah, yes, that old beloved dog whistle.

I don’t have time to read this right now but i suggest listening to “the problem we all live with” from this american life. It shows white women still defending segregation under the guise of safety.

“The next summer, Bell tried to rally newspaper editors and segregationists across the state”

What are the odds that someone who actually believes a deity chats with them on the regular is going to be an emotionally abusive parent? Pretty low eh? eh?

He all but stole her baby! this is enraging, not heart warming.

This whole business is skeevy af. A holier than thou cop suddenly ends up with a the child of a woman whose life he could have made a never-ending nightmare? What a disgrace.

Yeah, that story to me sounded like it was designed to appeal to the forced birther crowd; not the “lets help those addicted to opiates” crowd.

Like, we’re supposed to *cheer* a cop who took a homeless, drug addicted woman’s baby? Good god.

“She was a defective incubator, so now she’s on the sidewalk waiting for waste management.”

Seconded on the piece of shit thing - I’m wondering to what ends the little one will grow up with her adoptive parents regularly telling her how much her biological mother didn’t care about her. That’ll be GREAT for mental health. But then...being raised in a family that seemingly supports Trump enough to trot

By that time, said President will be universally recongized as a piece of shit himself.

So it was more than a little bit jarring to hear no mention of the plight of the woman—who remains on the streets without a lifeline—and instead see journalists and politicians praise the selflessness of the couple,

Also, time travelers, considering it’s 2018.
