A used but slightly newer (2015 on) MINI is a good choice: better reliability and the depreciation hit is already taken mostly.
I call my Mk7 GTI “the great equalizer,” because it’s the car I like to drive to any enthusiast car test drive. It makes a lot of other cars seem tame or dull. The only cars to humble the GTI so far are a Lotus Evora S and the new Supra.
Get one now while they’re underappreciated and still plenty out there with low miles....

A fox mustang was the car that got me into the car hobby and the car I wanted the most that I didn’t get to have as a teenager. Granted this ‘91 needed some minor work, had 120k miles, and was a slushbox, but this is a sad reminder that these used to be cheap—I think I paid $2600 for this one; that was a decade ago.
