This! The pages would get worn and covered with circled items in red ink. What a great time to be a kid that was.

This was by far one of the best HIW entries I've read so far, thanks Manoush!
Amazing article, a must-read for those of us a certain age. It still hasn't been topped.
Agreed! And she had an actual face on that big head :D
Same here, the things are ugly and all have the same basic shape and design.
I remember that as well, and have that Starlog issue in a box somewhere. Terrific reading :)
Same here, those shows were not to be missed back then, especially since we didn't have the means to record them until the 80s. Did not know that about Hamill and Ford, how cool!
It was arranged by a local newspaper reporter, who somehow found out I had an interest in astronomy (and possible career) even though I was only 17 at the time. He signed my National Geographic space book which had a photo of him at his personal observatory in Las Cruces, NM! He was very funny and encouraging, and…
Very cool. I got to have lunch with Mr. Tombaugh in 1985 in Flagstaff near Lowell Observatory. He was quite a character and I was awestruck most of the time, barely even remember eating :)
"Just tell it...to call you BILLY!" Creepshow is still awesome.
I don't think Bactine will be of much benefit in this situation o_O
Terrific post, totally agree. My grandfather was a conductor for Amtrak for 40 years, and some of my earliest memories are of riding the train in the early 70s. It's definitely lost its luster, but still fun to visit old train stations and imagine what it must have been like in the glory days.
Cool story, bro.
We just can't have a cool archaeological story with a possible Biblical connection without the self-righteous trolls crawling out, can we? I wonder if they do the same for Islamic or any other religion-oriented posts which have historical context. Likely not. Incredibly shallow, so to speak.
How, exactly, do you "de-escalate" conflict with someone who will blow themselves up and kill as many as possible? A weapon like that ship-based laser could stop pirates or other thugs from approaching a ship with malicious intent. You have heard of what happened to the USS Cole, right? Or Captain Phillips? Geez. And…
Pixar's "MEN ARE SHALLOW IDIOTS!" In 3D. Perhaps they'll feature the wife's Imelda Marcos-inspired shoe closet for balance, doubtful though. Unless they talk and all have quirky personalities.
The bad guys aren't going ask themselves if they "should" do anything, they are definitely going to develop new technologies and strategies. I, for one, don't want to be ill-prepared and have people die because we were sitting on our hands in doubt. Deterrence and strength won the Cold War, and we're now facing…
Or, you know, it can be used for defensive purposes against people trying to kill us instead of merely "making war."
Awesome! I had that very same record, and played it endlessly along with one from "SPACE: 1999."
I used pretty much all of those! Still have them as well, stored safely in a box. Need to convert 'em to digital someday...
