Cutting the cord has been GREAT for this, that and watching mainly kid stuff on PBS Kids. Every once in a while I will be somewhere with actual TV and see kids ads and I’m always so thrown by them. My kids are little (2 and 3) but I am eternally grateful we haven’t had to deal with toys ads this Christmas season.

Yeah, the healthcare thing is really freaking me out these days. Who the hell knows what the healthcare situation in the US will be in 5 years, let alone 10 years or 20 years or however many years til your retirement?? I feel like that’s the make-or-break factor at the moment that you just can’t account for.

Good on ya! My husband just got a pay bump and I immediately told him to increase his 401k. We’re comfortable where we are so it’s better to get that money right into savings rather than have it free to disappear on whatever random expense pops up.

The advice I have seem about earlier retirement says you should aim to sock away 20-25% of your salary to reach that goal.

Good call, I didn’t even think about the double caring-for-others scenario. I can’t imagine having young(er) kids in my 50s. Hell, I just turned 33 and feel like I’m too old to be chasing my toddlers around, plus, more often than not, I have the help of my mom.

I’m assuming the “retrofitting kit” is the wall attachment piece? We replaced our blinds with newer corded rollers a few years ago and the new ones came with these plastic pieces that the cord goes through, keeping the line attached to the molding rather than handing free.
