The thing about the MCU or the X-Men is that even the casual viewer will likely have seen many of the previous installments in the film series.

Some people don't mind Maguire and Dunst in the roles—I'm not as sold on them nowadays as I once was—but irregardless of that, the film has a lot of genuine tension in the mix for Peter. The will-they-won't-they thing is a bit insufferable but never less than taut, with some genuine payoff at the end.
