I wouldn’t advise doing any of this. Creating an environmental hazard, compromising your own health, etc. Oil and gas are carcinogenic. The same cloth braided lines are used in newer VWs too. Not only for fuel but also for vacuum lines - and there are a crap load of those. Some of these lines are pretty inexcessable to make the problem worse.
