“What other country allows you to get a government identification card that allows you to wheel about when you are not only a foreigner, but are illegally there?”

I think the most telling thing about her (and one of the saddest things about our society) is her belief that there’s someone in the White House who would gladly take up her cause. I’m a conservative who actively talked people out of voting for Trump because, well, he’s garbage. I think the worst thing he’s…
This woman is the worst type of person: entitled, overconfident, and lacking anything resembling empathy. Basically narcissism bordering on sociopathy. This type of person deserves and often gets exactly what they have coming, which is to either 1) Die alone, angry at the world and mourned by no one or 2)…
Real substance in this article. Thank you. I appreciated the astute analysis of policy and character, not to mention the incredible dissection of the subject’s career. Well done, journalism.
I know nothing helps me sleep better than pounding the back of my skull right before bed.
As someone who has had to troubleshoot BenQ projectors for the last several years, I don’t think you could pay me enough to take another one of their products.

I’ve never understood the appeal of Peanuts. I get that it’s been around forever and the characters will be part of the American zeitgeist for decades to come, but I just don’t get it. I never thought the strip was all that entertaining, the animated specials were kind of bland, and none of the jokes seemed to have a…
That sounds awesome. I’ll probably look into a broker when I buy my next car. Thanks!
I spent two years in various parts of southern Mexico. It’s just the same as any place in the US, i.e. use common sense, stay away from shady people/areas, don’t flash your wealth, be aware of your surroundings.
“Uneducated” really is the operative word here. If there were greater awareness that brown =/= Muslim this crap wouldn’t happen so much. Also if there were greater awareness that Muslim =/= terrorist, that’d be great. And while we’re at it, if there were greater awareness that street rando =/= holy defender of…
That makes perfect sense, and I’m sure he saved you more than $350 off the price of the car so basically the dealership pays for the service. Win!
I think that’s exactly why the section on “Research is Everything” is in the article. If you go in asking for a raise because of some nebulous idea that “I’m probably s’posed to” then yeah, things are gonna go bad. If you go in knowing what the position is worth and ask for appropriate compensation then things will be…
I’ve read some reports of people using brokers over on Jalopnik. It’s a fascinating idea, but I also kind of enjoy the haggle itself. It’ll be a few years before my next purchase so we’ll see where I’m at then.
Great point. I will say, however, that there can be intangibles that should be considered when negotiating a salary. I commented the same thing on another article today, but long story short: If Jane brings in more money she should be paid more, right? Well, what if she’s such a toxic influence she’s driving other…
Augh! Car negotiations are my guilty-pleasure topic to read about. I’ve only ever bought a couple of cars in my life, but for some reason I’m fascinated by the power differential and the potential for saving. Well said.
A smile goes a LONG way!
As someone who has been on both sides of the hiring desk before I can tell you that sometimes they have a hard limit on what they’re willing to pay. I was usually interviewing to fill jobs that paid around $40k per year. When someone came in and mentioned that they were looking for a salary of $50k+ it was a no go,…
It’s just so refreshing to see someone advocate for a logic-based discussion rather than an emotional one. Yeah, I can come up with some great zingers, one-liners, and mic drop bullet points, but that doesn’t make me right.
I think the people who are able to recognize the biases, hypocrisies, and inconsistencies in their own argument as well as others’ are in a unique position in today’s world. Unfortunately most of us subscribe to a certain viewpoint and stick with it out of convenience rather than any regard for facts and data.
If a person (regardless of gender) takes a leave of absence for any reason, they suddenly have less time on the job and generally will need a sort of reorientation period to get back into the swing of things. If a man has to take time off then yes, that should be taken into consideration when negotiating salary. Why…
