Things that are inside are more reliable that things outside? Number of cars I have broken a door handle on, 1. Number of cars where a window motor went out, 5. It really doesn’t matter where it is placed, a simple lever will be more reliable than a sensor.

They’re very common near schools or large factories on major roadways. Most of the time, the light doesn’t need to be active, but comes in handy at start/end of the day when you suddenly have an extra 1000 cars at that spot.

Seriously, how obtuse do you need to be to stop in a moving traffic lane, which may have cars driving upwards of 80mph if you’re on the freeway, just because you missed your exit?
