It seems that the people decrying this decision either don’t understand what happened or have some pretty disturbing racial views for our day. They didn’t take away her award; they just renamed the future ones from the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal to the Children’s Literature Legacy Award.

HerbertHoover, eh? Username checks out.

It really doesn’t take that much to seriously and permanently hurt or kill someone with blunt trauma to the head, especially with a solid, irregularly-shaped metal object like a bike lock.

I wonder if synesthesia has anything to do with the origin of grammatical gender.

Considering they have multiple authors, I suppose there might be a diversity of opinion within the newsroom.

You may be shocked to learn that many liberals own guns. In fact, the more liberals who own guns or know people who own guns and aren’t dicks about it, the better it is for sensible gun laws. When people turn gun ownership into a partisan litmus test, we get ill-informed gun laws, like California’s silly featureless

Really excellent point. Ditto for most rifles.

Conditioning my beard helps a good bit, but it won’t work miracles. It’s probably not a bad idea to do it regardless, and a good beard oil can do wonders for combating the dreaded beardruff.

I like to keep a couple packs of baby wipes in any kit: they are good for all manner of personal hygiene.

That’s a helpful analogy. I am now more interested in reading Infinite Jest (and more of his work in general) but with a more critical eye than I might have otherwise. I have read the odd long-form article essay here and there, and enjoyed his writing style, but I could definitely see this being like a Dave Matthews

Ha ha ha - sounds like we have that in common! In some circumstances, splitting the infinitive also seems much less ambiguous and much more clear. I am pretty firmly in the Splitting Infinitives camp.

I actually have not read Infinite Jest, thought it’s been on my list since my girlfriend strongly recommended it to me when we started dating, and I don’t have a strong opinion of him or his work. I had heard and read about him and his impact discussed positively at some length, though. Thank you for sharing the

One of my favorite times to meditate is while I wash the dishes. There are lots of different sensations (warm and cold water, sponges, smooth and ridged plates and dishes, metal and ceramic, towels, smells of soap and water, sounds of water and dishes, etc.), and at the end of it, you have done something productive

I also wouldn’t be terribly surprised to learn that Helena Bonham Carter gets paid more per episode than Foy did. I certainly agree it would be nice if the producers would offer Foy a bonus, though, especially considering her excellent performance and the success of the series.

David Foster Wallace was an extraordinarily influential and innovative author, and his novel Infinite Jest, was his magnum opus and considered one of the greatest modern, English-language novels. It’s also over a thousand pages, and a lot of people don’t get it, so people who love it and reference it a lot might be

I’ve always found the split infinitive rule to be silly, and when I found out its origin, I feel fully justified in ignoring it.

The niche subs are some of the best. If you have a hobby, there’s probably a sub for it, and, unless it’s a hobby that attracts a lot of douchebags, it will usually be populated with really nice, helpful people. The defaults get toxic pretty quickly, though.

My girlfriend uses it on parsnip fries to give them some tasty texture when she does Whole30. With a garlic aioli, it is a killer combination.

Now playing

I’m not sure which is more annoying: people’s irrational reactions to the idea that millions of people enjoy owning firearms and do so safely and without incident or people’s irrational reactions to the idea that anyone might be, understandably, uncomfortable around a firearm.
