Ah yes, the old standby of Republicans and conservatives: ignore the facts and substitute your own, then set up straw men rather than bother to understand what your interlocutor is actually saying.
I fully expect the same people who said their ridiculous tax giveaway to billionaires was going to pay for itself through economic growth to start screaming about “but how can we ever afford this?!”, but I would love to see Dems point to the obvious economic benefits of this. Unlike billionaires, your average college…
Alternatively, I drive a Saturn S-series that’s nearly a decade older than that with similar mileage. It’s worth about $1,500, maybe, but it’s also fairly reliable and relatively easy/inexpensive to repair when necessary. If I put in $1,500 worth of maintenance a year (much higher than average, but it’s hit that once…
Absolutely - I had a similar experience too! I got around Paris and Nice perfectly fine pretty much only knowing how to say “I’m sorry I don’t speak French. Do you speak English?” in French. I even had a guy get in our car with us to show us the way to our hotel when we were horribly lost in Parisian traffic (this was…
Checking in on the coal rolling anecdote front. My girlfriend drives a Prius and we live in southcentral PA. We have had it happen twice. One guy kept doing it for a while and stopped after he realized I was recording; the other one did it for a little while before an exit and I couldn’t get my camera up in time.…
I have never seen any serious critique of “gender neutral”. Go forth and use it guilt-free. If anyone gives you trouble, you can tell them some rando on the internet told you it was OK.

I have a Google Keep list for this very thing. Someone mentions something they are interested in sometime in June, I put it on the list. They get it in December, “Wow, gakatak, you’re so thoughtful!”
I like to get the big containers of minced garlic from Costco. I can never seem to get through a fresh bulb without it spoiling.

I thought some of these were already rules, and I suspect a lot of people were already playing with most of these rules. Oops! :-)
I thought they were neat when I got a set in my stocking a decade or so ago, but then I quickly realized they were not particularly good in drinks. Now they do have one use for me: they provide (a very small amount of) thermal mass to (ever so slightly) improve the operational efficiency of my freezer.
We do something similar but with potato rolls. A sensible substitution in PA Dutch Country.
This is all really excellent and measured advice, and I am particularly glad you pointed out that people should not be calling the police over something like this - it is not appropriate to bring in the potential, however remote, for deadly force into situations regarding poor manners - and the importance of recognizin…
I never understood curfews for adult children in college. I think it is important to set some boundaries on being respectful, though: if it’s going to be after midnight or whenever you go to bed, a courtesy text letting you know they are okay and what their plans are is entirely reasonable to expect. But they don’t…
Thank you! I twitched a little reading “here, here”, because I am that guy.
Ah yes, Elf on a Shelf - that timeless American Christmas tradition dating all the way back to the birth of Christ—er— 2004? And involving the purchase of an expensive decoration to support the feeding of starving children— er— the owners of Creatively Classic Activities and Book, Limited Liability Company.
Great advice, especially as someone who sometimes has a lot of trouble getting started!
That’s exactly why I support service worker unions. We’ll never get away from our ridiculous tipping culture until workers have the ability to bargain instead of having to beg and take whatever the big corporations give them lest they be fired for speaking up.
I shed a few tears watching Curiosity land from a hotel room in 2012.
I love having a 128GB card. I download Google Maps for like half of the eastern seaboard and anywhere I travel, and I have pretty much any album I’d ever want to listen to stored locally. I never have to worry about clearing up photos, and they all back up over WiFi anyway.
