ELI5: Because he put a lot of wheels on it, but didn’t install the differentials that ensured power was properly distributed to all 6 wheels.

I completely get your point, but I think you are making too big a logical leap based on the facts available. They didn’t schedule time on the ring to do this, but they did book a number of Ring specialists to wheel the thing. So that suggests at least some degree of preparation. We have no idea how much behind the

To be fair, calling anyone posting in these comments an “internet big mouth” is a bit pot/kettle

Hyperbole to point out that seat time is not everything. A good percentage of a lap at a DE is spent just sitting doing nothing, foot fully to the floor, just waiting for a braking zone. I would say this particular component of DE seat time is no more valuable as commuting seat time. Seat time isn’t everything. Also,

I mean, if cost per mile is the criteria, then commuting is the best value per mile. Quality seat time is what matters. You can get that at an HPDE, but not if you’re driving around at 8/10th taking late-apexes everywhere so you’re instructor feels comfortable. It’s best to do both if you can. Autocross will get you a

The straights are literally the most boring part. They only get interesting once you finally get to a braking zone. I cannot do HPDE anymore, I get bored. Id rather autox any day unless it’s a really interesting/new track, time trials, track-cross or wheel to wheel.

If Tesla beat Porsche’s time in this almost haphazard way, I think it would be more impressive than the manufacturers who have permanent bases of operations at the ring. There’s something cool about showing up with your car and a small and then running down some laps chasing a record.

Visible body flex. Astonishing

He’s much better on his channel than he is on Sky live commentating. He uses lots of words but says nothing and expresses no opinion or insight that only a recent driver could provide. “So intense!” “Totally crazy!” “Totally awesome!” are the most substantive part of his live broadcast input.

BIR. Racetrack. Not renting public roads. Very different costs and pre/post race responsibilities for organizers

Man that’s really interesting. Have you tried walking and rather than memorizing the course, determine which are the handful of key cones and ignoring everything else? Once I do that, I usually take 1-2 more walks and start training myself where I need to be looking. Like when I see X key cone or am at a certain gate,

Just think of all the entree fees you saved yourself!

Wat?

That’s a good on-paper argument, but the validity of that argument really depends on what you are extracting from that seat time. For someone very experienced and is able to drive at the limit smoothly, wheel to wheel, I agree with your argument (but not in terms of $). But I see SO MANY people at HPDEs/track days/etc

Don’t give up, that experience is a signal that you’re not looking ahead effectively. You can get away with poor vision habits on track, autocross is unforgiving. If you can autocross well, you’ll be even better on track. I started out doing track days and had the same struggles when I started out autocrossing. It was

I started out doing HPDE and I just can’t go back now that I autocross. I get bored out there pounding around again and again. More seat time is not always better, depending on what you are trying to learn. You will spend more time sliding a car around on 5 autocross runs that you will a whole day at the track. Drive

Amen. A certain segment of road racers shit on autocross as not racing. That segment usually is comprised of rich guys. The broke road racers get why autocrossers autocross. Fun AF, close competition, driving at the limit. You can do it with your daily without risking its existence.

But then you’re not racing. Everything changes when you know the clock is watching.

This is true, but the physics become less cut and dried when a car is no longer in control or not in a position to apply brakes effectively when exiting the track. Also, we can’t just weight the technical facts. The type of runoff available at any given track or corner will profoundly effect the mentality a driver has

I’m not a fan of any team per se, I just want to see good racing from the most talented guys on the grid and good management of teams. Which teams I’m most interested in ebbs and flows on that basis. LeClerc makes me potentially care about Ferrari again. Which is nice. Binotto makes me scratch my head and wonder wtf
