It is exaggerated to say that they will save a lot of "wood". The panels are anyway hollow, respectively hold only a inner honeycomb structure out of paper/cardboard. So they will save a 1 cm strip of verneer, nothing from inside just a bit of paper.

That might apply for the US, but in Europe with crazy 3G roaming fees, crossing a border with the phone nav that needs to download maps can get expensive.
