No it’s not bizarre. It’s denial. I used to have that same instinct and I’m black. In some people’s minds, to some degree in my mind, the racists are always somewhere else. It could never happen here. Not us. This is not who we are, etc. The real racists are always down the road or over the next hill.

yes but part of the norming process for tests is supposed to remove bias from the outcomes. just because the individual items on the test are less biased than they have been historically doesn’t mean the test isn’t culturally biased.

I don’t think that’s true. They removed the obvious biases but all of the implicit bias is still there. For example, white students who take the test in cohorts that are majority asian under perform as compared to the same students taking the test in majority white environments.
