She was awesome in Shameless. If you like a bit of Tom Hardy, she played the Elizabeth to his Robert Dudley in a BBC series called The Virgin Queen; and she was in a heartbreaking film called The Magdalene Sisters. I’m a bit of a fan. Most of her work has been in the UK, but she doesn’t get nearly as much exposure as

I’m the wonton kind

Thank you! I always hear American folks round here saying cunt is like a darn in the uk and I feel like I must be mixing with some grannies because it’s still the most severe swear we’ve got. I wonder where the idea came from?

The thing is, there just isn’t an appropriate way to comment on things like this. If you say “praying for them”, someone doesn’t want your prayers; get angry, someone says you’re disrespectful; reminisce about the city in peaceful times, and someone will tell you it’s not all about you.

It’s the rage that gets me. A lot of people have some really well thought out arguments about the Kardashians and I’m interested to hear them, but some people are just ragey! Someone here once said that Kim K makes people angry because she’s not following the accepted “celebrity we love to hate” route. By rights, she

Now you’re just being condescending. I was very polite to you. Don’t be a knob.

I understand the definition you are making. You didn’t explain it terribly well before.

Of course it has to do with this conversation. I did have a fulfilling educational experience and that is important because I believe that single gender schools are worth preserving.

I just disagree that removing single gender schools would remove the problem of boys clubs and nepotism (and “the benefits of being plugged into a powerful network” is nepotism). I think the problem could be solved without removing single gender schools from the equation and that is the route I would like to go down

Nepotism will always exist. It sounds like a cop out but getting rid of single gender education will not solve the boys club mentality. Even if we mixed all schools, I still wouldn’t have gone to Eton and I still wouldn’t benefit from the networks there.

Probably as many as there are women in top positions. Men vastly outweigh women at the top of business and politics, but that’s not because their schools were gender segregated, it’s because we live in a patriarchy.

I don’t know with this. Many private schools are gender segregated - I went to one. Some private schools, like Haberdashers Askes has Habs boys and Habs girls. It’s not at all the case that the boys’ schools are better than the girls’ - in terms of grade output Eton actually ranks about 15th in the country and the top

To differentiate, a free school is a “state school”. There are some grammar schools, which are different again (although non fee paying) but there aren’t so many of them these days.

Google. All he had to do was google. He could have saved himself a lot of grief and you a lot of stress. It was a daft move on his part - I don’t think this is a hill worth dying on

The criticism I’ve seen hasn’t been that aggressive, more incredulous than anything else. I mean, really, it’s not that hard to do a google before speaking in front of millions of people. I think it also comes from the fact that this isn’t the first time he’s said something stupid like this. If you’re going to go up

The fact that it’s awesome a gay man won an award at a notoriously homogeneous event does not detract from the fact that he said dumbass thing.

Really? I thought it was a vast improvement. But maybe that’s just because it covers half of his incredibly punchable face.

It’s news today because they’ve decided to pin it on a few top dogs. Good that someone is being held accountable, but no one gets away with decades of abuse with just one or two people protecting them. Far more people than we could ever prosecute turned a blind eye and allowed it to happen

He also predated my childhood but I think everyone found him creepy, even at the time. As someone said elsewhere on the thread, many people were genuinely surprised by Rolf Harris as he had been well liked. No one was surprised by Saville. He’d always been a creep.

It really bothers me because I’ve been lurking here for years and the commenters here are *the* reason I’m as informed as I am. I genuinely think I’m a better person for reading this site but goddam if the writers haven’t turned into a bunch of meangirls! Sorry, #rant, but it's sad to see
