I was a philosophy major in college and aesthetics was one of my favorite subjects. I think the absolute simplest way to get at this is that judging the objective merits of art requires clear criteria, and no one can ever agree on what these criteria are.

You don’t have to write songs to be relevant. This is a bias that is inherent in a particular way of looking at music. Choosing to perform a particular song a particular way has artistic merit as well. Yo-Yo Ma doesn’t compose the pieces he plays, but people still think pretty highly of him.
