Get a GTI...kidding. The Passat is nice, but unless you are going for a TDI and/or you absoultely have to have a German sedan, there is not really a compelling reason to choose the Passat over a mid-size sedan from Japan, Korea, or the US. Of course if the current depreciation on ‘13 Passats is crazy cheap...that is

Agreed, what an absolute jerk. In fact, all old people are jerks — they should just be forced to store all of their possessions in black garbage bags once they pass 80 years old so that cleanup is easier when they expire.

I did. I got rid of my less than 2-year-old Focus ST for a 2003 BMW 540i msport. Yes somewhat inspired by Tavarish. I had absolutely zero issues with the Focus and by any reasonable measure it was a great car, but I didn’t LOVE it. As a 35 year old with three small kids I always felt a bit childish in the ST.

My first Suby was the sedan version of this car. 93 Legacy SS with the insanely rare factory 5 speed. Still miss that one dearly

many.

For several months now I’ve been trying to convince myself NOT to follow this sort of advice. I have always been practical and I’m getting really sick of it.

This is what I typically do:

Perhaps your definition of a “real Jalop”and my definition are a bit different.

I’m not saying I disagree with your column, but I could write a counterpoint that touches on how worn out cars help to keep poor people poor.

Bro...if you can’t bro hard enough in your Ranger and you need more Bro from your tow, then maybe you should get that RAM. Just be sure to finance for 96 months and put nothing down. :D

Turned in the lease on my 2014 RAM 1500 and picked up a 2008 Jeep Wrangler 2-door, since I can do all the repairs myself and I would rather have a convertible than something with all kinds of screens.

Hi Tom!

Can confirm. Replaced an ‘11 750i with an ‘04 Phaeton.

Shhh...most of my articles can be just summed up with those three words. :D

This could be summed up in three words: do the math. It never ceases to amaze me how many of my friends just buy new cars because they’re new and assume it will save them money. Sit down and put the numbers into a spreadsheet. It doesn’t take long and will save you tons of money in the long run.

Lol, Ive done it a few times, but most recently for my Daily Drivers, I went 05 Tundra DC (paid off and 6 years of ownership) that I was always repairing, to 96 4Runner (paid cash and had for 2 years) but also lots of repairing. I got tired of it and picked up a new 15 FoST because I wanted a DD while keeping a

I haven’t done it, but I’ve been thinking hard about selling the Fiesta ST and using the proceeds for a Mercedes W123 300TD or W124 TE.

Out of our 6 mil or so monthly readers, I’d be curious to see the numbers of the people who actually do this. I bet it’s more like Tavarish and maybe a dozen other people. :)

Most jalops have the opposite problem. We get rid of newer, more expensive, reliable cars, for older, cheaper cars that need more attention.

I grew up in michigan, I know how it goes. Every nice car gets ruined by the rust after 5 or 10 years of winter driving, pushing up the value of the cars you want to buy. It’s crazy how much cheaper, nice cars are here in texas.
