Heh. My car is probably parked 22hrs per day. During those 22 hours, I regard it as an artistic piece in my garage. It might be wasting space... but it’s my space!
These are everywhere here in the SF Bay Area, too. In fact, my neighbor was up late last night trying to get his noisy old Toyota truck to idle properly (argh!)
I completely agree! Stef, I remember you described the Fiesta as “a cute little peanut of a car.” And you thought the sedan version was an abomination. I completely agree... and I bought a Fiesta hatch. I like how it looks, though I wish it were more reliable.
I wish The Lap was just a coherent video that shows a lap from beginning to end. It also needs an on-screen speedometer, and perhaps a lateral-G gauge. Basically, I just want to watch Harry’s LapTimer-style videos of Top Gear guests in a cheap car, sort of like this:
I always just fast forward through the star interview... though I do enjoy watching The Lap.
This. “Cheap, Fast, Reliable — pick two.”
This is eerily similar to my own plan. I’m contemplating selling my non-turbo manual Fiesta and buying an E46 wagon or 1st gen Volvo V70 T5.
I am doing this. I have a 2014 Fiesta, and every damn thing in the interior rattles. Ford’s warranty is a joke... bring the car in, and it’s “done” a month later, but they didn’t actually fix anything. Oh, and no loaner car unless you spend hours on the phone with Ford Corporate to demand a loaner.
North Central West Virginia. Quite specific.
Soary
We had a W123 non-turbo 240D with the 3-speed auto. We timed the 0-60 using a wristwatch. The best of 3 runs was 0-60 in 27 seconds. Really the best of 2, because on the first try we actually lost track of time and forgot where the second hand was when we started.
You may be right about the suspension problems....

I do love an old Hudson...
My parents used to have an old Range Rover like this as a farm truck. My dad thought it was hilarious to pull a manure spreader with a Range Rover.
Gotcha. Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear that the car was so expensive to keep on the road. If I get an E46, I will do the easy stuff myself, but if I get in over my head, there is an indie BMW shop a few streets from my house.
What were did you find to be the expensive aspects of E46 ownership?
The E46 3-series is my favorite wagon:
Who is this car perfect for?
