I really don’t get the “outrage” over this. Honestly, she gets a tattoo in kanji, a bad one at that, and suddenly shes appropriating Japanese culture. Look if some white girl wants to get he hair braided in cornrows and look foolish then her, or if Grande want’s to get kanji tattoo let her who cares. Shes not claiming

anecdotal, perhaps, but i haven’t seen anyone, not even twitter randos, discuss this beyond “hahaha the tattoo doesn’t mean what she wanted it to mean!”

i don’t recall anyone dunking her for appropriation but i do recall people dunking her for 7 barbecues.

Actual cultural appropriation looks more like this or this - your mileage may vary on how offensive these are but to me, these examples either mock or disrespect another culture.

That’s totally different from wearing a pair of mocassins though, or getting a Kanji tattoo - in those cases you obviously aren’t taking

Only in America can different cultures mixing seem like a hate crime.

I really don’t understand. In France, we’d laugh because of the original meaning. But we’d laugh at people thinking it’s cultural appropriation. What a world to live in.

Time to shut down Japanese, Chinese, Italian Mexican Restaurants!!!

They give them the platform because they agree with it... that’s why the author of this article had to make sure to editorialize and claim that the Japanese people’s opinions do not matter by saying this...

It’s all on account of self-important ignorants who speak of things they don’t fully understand. It used to be that cultural appropriation referred to a derogatory use of one’s culture, but nowadays social studies graduates with no real education feel the need to tell everyone about their misguided perception of the

This is what westerners need to understand. Cultural appropriation is a bullshit argument used when you have nothing else to say.

Okay so let me get this straight.

Color me surprised that the country who didn’t bat an eyelash when an idol group dressed up in full SS uniform isn’t really offended when a western pop princess gets a tattoo. This kind of outrage only exists in countries with sizable minority populations. And most of it stems from guilt over past treatment of said

Cultural appropriation is a concept engineered by twits that are trying to actively divide multi-cultural nations. So when you see a rise in white nationalism and you start trying to shame people for embracing a part of another culture don’t be too surprised if the average person will just be pushed further into their

Ashcraft, why should we take these comments with a grain of salt when Japanese are stating their opinions on Japanese cultural appropriation? Every comment disagreed with the notion of cultural appropriation and pointed out that only Americans on a quest for new outrage are outraged by ariana grande’s tattoo.

Remember that one high school girl who wanted to wear qipao to prom because she appreciated how it looked? Such an innocent thing to do.

Who the hell has been calling this cultural appropriation? I thought we were all laughing because she got the tattoo wrong, twice. Getting ‘charcoal grill’ tatted on your wrist  is in no way belittling japanese culture, nor is it playing down the influence of the people from whom she’s trying to take inspiration.

Media coverage of random nobodies getting outraged over nothing on twitter has got to stop. You are giving this ridiculous “outrage mob” a platform to spew their uninformed garbage. Since when was celebrating other cultures a bad thing, seriously it is just insane that people get upset about it. Meanwhile the people

wait, i’m not even peripherally interested in Ariana Grande’s body choices but i am interested in where anyone but celebrity blogs are saying it’s cultural appropriation. are there actual *people* (not rando twitter nonsense) saying this? like, in a column someone wrote? this is just someone getting a dumb tattoo that

Something tells me that the vast majority of people accusing Grande of cultural appropriation doesn’t understand nor doesn’t give a fuck about Japanese culture.

Cultural appropriation” is a nonsense term that’s just going to divide people
