Trump can’t be ignored but don’t fight him where he is strongest.

I’ve seen this repeated a lot, but Dems actually picked up four Senate seats in 2000. Granted, Republicans had 19 senators up to the Dems’ 15 as well. But the Senate went from a 54-46 Republican majority to a 50-50 tie. (In June 2001, Republican Jim Jeffords changed to an independent and caucused with the Dems, giving

Hell, it even worked on Clinton for the most part. Sure, his personal popularity ended up rising by the end, but most of his second term was consumed by the investigations and shenanigans. It forever tarred his legacy, and I believe ultimately hurt Hillary’s chances to win the presidency as well.

Gore didn’t motivate Dems to turn out like Clinton did in 96 ...

Trump wins because he is attacked and he has something to fight back against.

If nobody’s mind can be changed and the status quo will remain intact, then what are we even talking about here? One the one hand you’re saying that pursuing impeachment won’t change anything, but on the other you’re saying it’ll be a huge victory for Trump.

Very well said.

I honestly don’t understand what the goal is for you guys that want to lay down on impeachment because it likely won’t remove Trump from office. You claim that it would hand Trump and Republicans a political victory — but abandoning impeachment is the ultimate political victory. It would send a signal that

Bipartisanship will never happen. The Republican Party is much too far gone. Chasing after a bipartisan agreement on any of this is foolishly trying to kick Lucy’s football. It is setting an impossible goal so we can continue avoiding taking any action.

What comes after is we blast Republican senators for protecting their criminal president and spitting on the Constitution and the rule of law.

Impeachment isn’t only about removing Trump from office, it’s about sending a signal that the rule of law and the Constitution still matter to at least some American citizens and leaders.

NotAVirus is dismissing posts that disagree with his “But it’s less popular!” assertion.

It also needs to be constantly pointed out that refusing to pursue impeachment is even more cynically playing politics, particularly when those advocating against impeachment so quickly point to opinion polls and the fact that Republicans won’t vote to remove him.

How would Trump’s position be strengthened by a public and televised trial of the various crimes and constitutional violations he committed? You guys just assert this as some common political wisdom, but it makes no sense and seems to be based entirely on how Clinton emerged from a very different impeachment effort

Pursuing impeachment is exactly how we try to convince America and the world that all hope isn’t lost and that we need change.

Anything and everything Trump says plays well with his base. At some point our leaders have to realize that reality is inconsequential to what Trump will tell his base to get them fired up.

The alleged “popularity” of impeachment is beside the point. If supporting unpopular things was all that mattered, then Republicans would never win another election.

Does everyone get how you’re basically being Trump puppets when you yell at Pelosi because Trump is doing something insane? Get out of this mindless cycle. Blame the abuser.

I’m surprised it doesn’t have actual guns on it.

I’m so sorry to hear about your friend.
