Enlistment standards are already pretty low. And if we’re engaging in “realistic” hypotheticals, then backending welfare programs into the military will definitely lead to the military replacing the actual social safety net.

Conservatives pretend this will motivate the poor — who they’ve convinced themselves are much lazier and simply worse than them — to go get those jobs that either don’t pay enough to alleviate their poverty or don’t exist in the first place (with the latter soon to increasingly become the case).

It should never be considered as serious policy because anyone who has the most basic sense of economics (clearly, as we’ve observed before, not Bernie Sanders) knows that the economy overheats as unemployment nears 0 and inflation becomes a massive problem.

The next recession is likely right around the corner. This proposal will look prescient when that happens.
