You have to prove you’re 21 before buying alcohol. You have to prove who you are before signing some legal documents. Both activities are in place (and legal) to prove that you’re not engaging in a crime.

I went NP but only looking at this as a hobby, not a car you daily send your daughter off to college in. I’m the handy sort that likes to tinker so I could see playing around with this thing and keeping it going as things break (sure, that might mean I’m quite busy). But for $5K I’m not going to worry about

Agreed. This Red doesn’t do anything for the car excepot accent it’d awkwardness. Dare I say it almost has some kit-car angles and excess to it?

Honestly not bad looking, but the no CarPlay is the non-starter. My next car will be an EV, but it’s the Mach-E and some Volvos that are on the list. Sorry, GM — if you listened to your customers you’d probably be on the list, too.

Well, GM, if you’re reading this you might want to consider it a free and very honest focus group. If not, well... don’t say you weren't warned about this dumb idea.

It’s just too ugly. ND.

Solid NP if you REALLY hate your neighbors and want to keep this parked on your lawn, but for the rest of the world and every other reason out there, ND, ND, ND.

Sad to say it, but a government run program (like in China) would be a lot more efficient and reliable than one in the US. I see US battery swap places becoming as appealing as a Jiffy Lube here in the US — ratty waiting room, overgrown landscaping, sketchy characters hanging around, people dumping trash in the

Close to a NP, but not quite there. A quick AutoTrader search in my area brings  up a few of these for a bit less and with a lot less miles. Admittedly some are 1.9L models, but honestly a car like this would be just as fun to putter around in with the smaller mill.

I don’t see it happening, at least not here in the US. A five minute battery swap is one thing, but what happens when the line is 30 cars deep for the 6 battery swapping bays? (holidays, after work, Saturday AM, etc). A row of 20 chargers would be far cheaper, more universal, and less costly. A battery swapping

I had one of these back in 1993 or so and it was a fun-enough car, and I miss it a bit. But this one is just irrationally priced and modded. Bring it back to stock wheels and lights and maybe — just maybe — it’s a $12,000-15,000 car. But beyond the crazy price and the bad mods, I think you’d REALLY want to have one of

That electric MR2 type concept that Toyota seems to be toying with. Is it too much to hope for something relatively lightweight with 250 miles of range for about $30K?

Me too. I just hope it’s comfortable for my 6'2" self. I think it’s a car that will appeal to a lot of people for a lot of reasons.

^ all this, 100%. Aspires and Geo Metros were great cars to get young people on the road and to work, and they were the staple of rental fleets. It’s too bad there’s nothing on the market like them today because they would save people on the lower end of the economy tons in gas money and repair bills (and missed days

To me, the beauty of the P1800 is that it was always meant to be a modest but slightly special car, and and one in original condition today would still be a delight to look and drive. This one is trying to be something else, but only the owner (and maybe the internet-brain trust he’s leaning on) really know. ND

Funny, just today I rolled over 59,000 miles in my Volvo XC60 T8 PHEV. Not a single issue in all those years/miles. I suspect this CR “report” is skewed by little complaints like people having a hard time understanding the Infortainmnet system that controls all those “problem areas”. (Admittedly, the Volvo’s

Nah, because even after you spend a few grand to get it running you’d still own what might be the highest-mileage ZR1 in the world. I’d rather spend more money on a nice one.

Gotta say it looks good! Though I wouldn’t want to be the one paying for new tires when those 24's wear out.

NP for a likely reliable curiosity that you could use as is (AT tries would make this the perfect winter beater) or, if I owned an auto body shop, it’d be fun to clean this up and paint it some cool color -- it could be good practice for the new guys in the shop. Regardless, it’s play money... NP all day long.

I’m sure it’s worlds better than the last Tacoma, but at those prices I’d probably start shopping for a budget-friendly spec full size Ford or Chevy if I really needed to do truck-y things.
