There are some efficiency gains. More area to let it breath. Draw a big circle on a paper, then draw 2 circles as big as possible, next draw 4 circles as big as possible and you will see that the 4 circles is more area.  It is a small gain.

WD40 isn’t an appropriate lubricant, you should try some lithium grease or another grease. WD40 is going to attract grime and make your problem worse.
