As someone using one of Japan’s off JR system with a tap based card, I am confused on why it took so long to switch. I have seen the tap card here for over 10 years and that was JR main lines. The smaller ones have only started it in the last 5 years when the technology was more affordable.

I now live where they make them and love the compact cars.
