You do realize 3.5 million is low...right? The movie had a budget of $144 million.
$40 million for the weekend isn’t terrible. But with that opening weekend combined with its budget, for this movie to be a success, it’s going to need strong word of mouth. Like I said before, I honestly wish it the best and plan on seeing it in theaters myself, but to write an article pretending this number is great…
Because one quick gag during a montage in a film full of otherwise dry wit puts it on the same level of a remake which is a bunch of dumb slapstick throughout.

Pretty weird movie with painful jokes and terrible stereotypes. Nice try at the reboot, but shooting the end monster in the penis is real high-brow comedy which warrants no criticism.
Is a $40 to $50M opening weekend that great for a movie with a reported $140M budget? Films generally have to make 2-3x their budget in ticket sales to beak even, and they often make a disproportionate share in the opening weekend.
