You can’t honestly believe that there wouldn’t be violent blowback from the electoral college installing someone else. It is preposterous to suggest otherwise. Maybe if they installed Pence. Maybe.

Yes, never. The rules of the election were set beforehand. Ours are not great. The candidate with the most votes does not always win. But that is our system. Having 538 people change the system after the fact is a disaster that our country would not recover from. It’s basically advocating for a civil war.

Which part of it? Our democratic norms are maintained by tradition and inertia as much as anything else. If you throw away the tradition that the electoral college follows the election results, you will never get it back.

Faithless electors swung the VP election when the VP and Pres were still voted on separately. It’s hardly the same thing.

The argument that long dead men left themselves a safety valve in case this whole “elections” thing turned out to be a bad idea is not a great argument for overturning an election. Who cares that it is there, or why it was put there? It has never been used, and it never should be.
