You don’t technically start a new contract with them on the service plan, now they are just shifting that over to the phone plan, getting you locked in that way. Its not “youre stuck until the plan is up” but “youre stuck until you paid off the phone.”

Carriers do tend to f*ck up releases with their bloated software and exclusivity plans, but counter point to the article, buying phones online can often be shady and offer no sort of warranty. Many times, the prices aren’t that much better.

Its not really Apple though, abroad they have been doing that for a while. The radio manufacturers (since no phone maker makes their own) have figured out broad spectrum radios for some time.

I don’t have the monetary bandwidth to upgrade a familt of four phones by buying them outright. Even if it costs more in the long run it is easier for me to manage with a payment plan embedded within my phone service contract.
