To pick up where you left off in another comment, lunching would only be considered a hate crime if your potato salad recipe indeed included three jars of mayonnaise. In that case, I would totally support the potatoes’ right to sue on the grounds of them being obliterated taste-wise.
I expect this is meant for people who were involved but may not have actively killed the person. More serious than ‘accomplice’ and with stiffer penalties but without the extra burden of proof that comes with a murder charge.
