The entire premise of a form tackle is to maintain contact with the ball carrier as they go to the ground. Creating separation (after initial contact) just creates a second (and more dangerous) collision after the ballcarrier hits the ground. The defender knows that they are doing this, and the goal is just to injur…

The rule in layman’s terms is this: if the defender makes contact with the QB and it’s obvious they are both going to the ground, the defender can’t then jump into the air (to create separation between their bodies) just to then also fall on the QB a split second after the QB hits the ground.
