You're missing the point. The point is that it did all this in 1999 while everyone else wasn't even close. Sure, a nine-year newer bike will out-do it. Just like how a 2014 bike will out-do the 2008 CBR 1000.
What similarly priced bike in 1999 could beat this?

No, they would get paid to scrap it. I take it to the scrap yard, they weigh it, and they give me cash. Last time I checked the rate was around $0.10/lb. That would have come out to around $300.
