In fact, I see no comment on the legitimacy or otherwise of CNN’s subject, only a comment specifically on the framing (“this is how that article begins”) highlighting how stupidly simplistic and plain bad that particular piece of writing (i.e. the beginning) is.

Can’t say I know the answer to that one. The earliest given usage in that same Wikipedia page is British Colonial India but nothing there states where the fabric itself originated. You might need to consult a professional fabrician* (note I just made this word up).
