Is there a story behind the Dia de los Muertos aesthetic running through all the Drinkbox games? Even Severed had it (which, p.s., you should play because it’s clever and fascinating and very well done, despite being released only on unpopular platforms at the time)
Doom VFR is fun, but short. It’s basically a smaller Doom, with a little more OOMPH because critters are more threatening when they’re in full 3D. For the full experience (full movement instead of teleporting everywhere), you’ll need your VR legs, because it’s fast. I had to play in short 20-30 min sessions at first…
Although it won’t have the intensity of playing it through it the first time in VR, you definitely owe it to yourself to replay RE7 in VR! I’ve beaten it 3 times at least, and I *still* have to steel myself for the initial Mia section. You never really get used to that level of intensity right in your face, even if…
No other *major* games for the Aim controller, but a few indie/shorter games. A lot of people like Arizona Sunshine, the zombie game, but I haven’t played it. I did play Doom VFR, and although they didn’t nail the Aim implementation, it was fine as long as you basically used it as a hip-fire gun.
What blows you away…
Might be too late, but back in the day you could get old Playstation Cameras and Moves on eBay that still worked just fine with PSVR, for a heavy discount.
Was definitely impressed by Playroom, and I’m looking forward to the full-length Astro Bot: Rescue Mission coming out soon!
Some other recommendations:
I’ve always preferred the smaller-scale stories. “Save the world” has been done to death, you basically know where the plot will end the moment it begins, and the typical beats are always there. Compare that to the personal story of Vagrant Story or the story of the city in Dragon Age 2, where the developments could…
Unavowed sounds up my alley, and seems to be getting some heavy praise. I’ve just got to find myself some PC gaming time.
Been playing:
It’s been a long, long time since I’ve played the IFComp games, but I recall enjoying them quite a bit. It’s like reading through an exceedingly clever short story collection. Would love to get back into it!
Still, so many years later, this stands as the most beautiful game I’ve ever played.
I didn’t mess with potions, even on the hardest difficulty, until the DLC. That’s the point where it got so hard I had to — and they are indeed super powerful when used right.
As for random map points, don’t burn yourself out.. the regular ‘real’ content is meaty enough!
I don’t think I can say it better than Wolfman, SAM, and others, who are far more skilled at verbomancy than I. But I’ve appreciated Matt and GLOG for oh so many years as an oasis of sanity, reflection and relaxation around a shared passion that is hard to find anywhere, regarding any topic.
The news makes me…
I’m fine with it staying a niche thing.. I understand that motion sickness is a thing, and most people don’t want to strap in to a bunch of devices when they game. That keeps it from being as convenient as phone or casual gaming, which limits the audience.
But as long as they keep putting stuff out, I’ll keep buying…
Yes! Late to the party, but I loved Invisible Hours. I’d love to see it spark larger studios doing big-budget versions of the same ‘gameplay’ conceit.. it could easily spawn its own subgenre.
I like a lot about Zak McCracken.. the gonzo plot, the multiple character puzzles.. but in the storied history of LucasArts adventures, I think it’s hamstrung by having so many non-obvious fail states. I wonder if reaction to it is what turned LucasArts into heavily touting ‘no failstates’ as its design philosophy…
Maybe it comes from playing it during God of War, but the animation and voice acting for Captain Spirit kinda threw me off. The graphics themselves are better, but I feel like those two were a step down from Life is Strange.
God of War: I’m Level 6 now, after finishing the dwarf quests and using a brand new armor set to switch from Strength-focused to Runic/Cooldown-focused, and I’m loving the new build. Whereas the early game was defensive stick-and-move axe-tossing, now I just wade in and smash face with runic attacks nearly nonstop. I…

God of War: Just exited the mines and the peak is in sight, and I don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said. It’s gorgeous, it’s frenetic, I am eager to play it each day when I get home. The plot hasn’t gone anywhere super special yet, but the dwarf brothers are quite amusing.
Two songs on my Spotify playlist are bangers for any sort of intense activity:
Dr Wily Stage 3-4 (Mega Man 3) - The Greatest Bits
Ducktales (The Moon) - Year 200X
Good luck!
