Yeah, these are not fans of hills - here in CA I ran the A/C constantly but we rarely saw any significant hills (partly why I figured the 5 was up to having the trailer).

I just recently sold my Mazda5 and I regularly strapped a small enclosed cargo trailer on it consisting of ~1,100 pounds plus a couple hundred in the back and worst I ever got was just under 17. Mine was a manual trans though.

LOL - came here to tell the same story about my grandpas ‘73 454 Sub. 6mpg no matter what - empty, towing his travel trailer or big Bayliner - always 6 mpg.
