I was more willing to entertain the “I was just ignorant” explanation at first, because I can all but guarantee he had someone else organize and set up the dinner. She herself uses the word stealing. She’s defining her own actions and then trying to justify them by, basically, “I think I should be able to do this because I say so.”

That posing in front of piles of goods chaps my hide because 1), it’s clearly staged to show How Generous I Am, See? and 2) I’m thinking of all the devastated people those goods could be helping right now if they weren’t sitting around a lobby for a photo op instead of actually being distributed out.

Thank you for articulating so eloquently what I couldn’t quite figure out how to say. That’s precisely my concern as well; it would be very easy to simply overlook so many of the undertones that make the book so good and so subversive for its time.
