I know the cartoon is what really blew up their popularity, but one can make an argument that the cartoon itself was a "horrifying redesign" of a damn good comic book.

I see the current design as being actually true to the comic book, in which the characters are MUCH more gritty and, well, ninja like. And yeah, while I can do without the nostrils, they're a lot more bada$$.
