If memory serves, the early screenings got great reviews, but for some reason the studio couldn’t figure out if they wanted to release it as is or with substantial changes, and kept passing the buck on it. Hopefully it’ll get released in its original version - I’m curious to see what an out-there X-Men horror film…

the trailer was looking promising, and the property isn’t well known enough to sort of run out on its own...plus the actors may now all be visibly older, so that would seem the thing to do...but then again after Guardians, they don’t really know what is or isn’t a minor property.  For all they know this could spawn…

For those keeping score, of the seven films to cross the billion mark, this and Black Panther are the only ones that didn’t have the help of the MCU’s most bankable character Iron Man. It’s also the ONLY one so far whose main hero was making their first appearance with no previous success to build from. So what’s that…

Hell, they should just make Shuri the lead.  She was pretty cool.

Yeah, I was unsure what he meant by that. Did he mean they went to watch the drag show as entertainment, which would be fine, or did he mean they were gawking at the clientele of the bar, which would not be fine? I dunno.

Yeah, it definitely seems like he’s prone to fetishizing trans women. I mean, in the bedroom, as long as it’s consensual between all parties, all bets are off, but in the real world, I really hope he heeds the advice given to him here and treats trans women as individuals and respects their comfort level

I am fairly certain that the entire point of a drag show is to use the performers as entertainment. That’s why the word“show” is in there. Is it not? Have I misunderstood the concept of entertainment?

It’s so often the case that our first (knowing) exposure to transpeople is through porn, the danger of fetishization is real. I know that the first time I knowingly meet a transman in a real life setting, I’m going to have to be real careful not to be a dick. If all else fails, shut up, I guess.

Right there with you. I applaud them for doing an interesting experiment and it looks like it might actually be decent, but I just don’t care in the least bit. It just feels completely unnecessary.

It was a good call, asking Bailey Jay to chime in, since there’s a 100% chance GHMP has jacked it to her.* She’s also very outspoken and articulate about trans issues. I don’t know if she’s still doing it, but she has a great podcast about trans life and horror movie geekery.

It’s our old pals, internalized homophobia and toxic masculinity! A lot of these dudes don’t want to be one of “those fags” because they want to see themselves as “real men,” “alphas,” or whatever. They’re not unlike the “str8" guys I see so often on Grindr or Scruff.
