If you think you can deal with winters, how about Boston? It's a real city in terms of amenities, but lots of cool neighborhoods, good beer culture, and doesn't get much bluer politically. Also, Burlington, Vermont if you want something smaller. Caveat for Boston, it's super expensive to rent.
