I live in Florida. Gas is non-existent days before landfall of a hurricane. Evacuation is futile, which is why we chose a do not evacuate zone to live in.

I wonder what the actual evac demand would be compared to gas cars. Like, I’m sure there are a huge number of car owners who leave their gas powered car on near empty and only fill up when they absolutely have to; I’m assuming that number is surely less for EVs simply because there is a huge number of them that are

LOL Lake Charles is such a hell hole, but why is the charger so far away from I-10, where the majority of traffic is?

Eh, I’ll just catch it on TV

Transit authorities hung new signs on Wednesday that corrected the spelling of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge for the first time in 54 years, delighting elected officials who fought for the spelling correction.

Looking at the bridge on a satellite image, there are significant breakwaters around the base of each tower and those towers look like they’re in water too shallow for most cargo vessels. And when I looked at them on a marine chart, the water around the bases is less than 30 feet. A modern cargo ship will run aground

I can understand traveling to see the eclipse, but why would people jam into particular spots, especially big congested cities? Literally any place from Mazatlan through Montreal and up into the Maritimes in a 115-mile-wide path of totality that happens to have fair weather will provide a comparable experience.

Mrs. Russell, eighth grade: “If you’re not sure about your sentence, rewrite your sentence.”

Was reading and laughing at same. Whether it’s Boing, Tesla, or Maersk many of the accidents are attributable to one thing: making money. Maybe it can get a little muddied when you introduce the idea of making money at the expense of safety compared to making money by rushing half-baked goods to market in an effort to

Predicting people will be stupid - probably not actually a stupid thing to do. ;)

Given the state of things, perhaps the “fix” to the ship involved baling wire. But we know that any copy editors that GMG might have employed bailed out a long time ago.

Someone call Warren G, because it’s time to Regulate (the shipping industry).

Came here to share your shock.

Nice.  I think the most shocking thing I saw in 2017 was people just stopping on I-95 in SC.

Yeah I keep reading articles referring to “Black swan” events and it’s like, no baby, that’s just late-stage capitalism. There’s only so much you can suck out of the husk before the well runs dry.

I’m absolutely shocked that cut-throat capitalism leads to under-maintained equipment, overworked employees, and generally unsafe conditions. Safety be damned! We have profits to maximize!

The face of a woman who still thinks it’s witchcraft.

It’s clearly a knee jerk reaction, the way Trump calls any coverage that is unfavorable to him “fake news.”

I live in the South.  Try to enforce that and there will be another shooting war.  Big Hair Karen isn’t putting down her phone without a fight.
