For some vehicles, it makes more sense to buy new.  At least that way, you’ll get be the one providing any abuse and get to decide all the options if it is being ordered.

I guess it depends on the access to the car while in storage.  The alternative would be to have their own connection into the rail network and when the trip is over, have the car moved onto the private siding.  That wouldn’t be cheap either, but one would have more control over who would have access to it.

For Midwest deliveries from CA ports, one would hope the containers are getting put on a train.
