Gah, I misunderstood this tweet, performers actually don't get paid, with the exception of compensation for any expenses. They get 'paid' in exposure and publicity, how generous of the NFL.

I heard a story about Bruno Mars performing, and the person being interviewed said that he wasn't paid, nor was Madonna, etc. That the publicity and record sales from the Super Bowl is way more compensation. I don't know how far back this goes, but I guess it's true.

Correct. Halftime performers are not paid, ever. The NFL treats it as a "promotional" opportunity for artists, which is the level of reasoning used by the local corner restaurant for not paying the jazz combo that plays on Monday nights.

Their 'payment' is usually a donation to the charity of their choice, I believe.

Clearly the NFL, as a non-profit organization, has been hurting for money for some time. Unless people start watching this Super Bowl (?) then who knows how long the NFL will be around.
