I pointed this out in the comments of the article responding to Dave Zirin's rape/jock culture piece last week—that young male athletes are taught to see women as the "spoils" of athletic success and that is a problem. I think the article must have been shared on Deadspin because I got tons of "Oh, so you're saying

The only good reason to hold a party for junior high kids at Hooters: "They are not charging us for a party room and providing a free dinner for my players."

It's inappropriate that it's the coach pushing this, against the wishes of the parents, but otherwise I honestly don't see an issue.

If only Elle UK could afford Pope & Associates.

Starred because of the bank analogy.

Oh, man, that's priceless.

Hair and wigs is a little bit more of a gray area than blackface (get it...gray area? blackface? is this thing on?), but I think the distinction that TheWireMonkey made is important. If you're a character or a historical figure whose hair is a part of their image, it's probably okay. But if you're wearing an afro and

But I think that's why we're having a conversation in the thread of an article about the connection between jock culture and rape culture, especially when we're talking about teenage boys who might not see the distinction.

I'm not. That's just as superficial. But Musburger didn't say, "You pageant girls, you get all the star athletes...If you're a young lady in Alabama, start practicing your walk in heels for the bikini competition."

Your phrasing and rationale doesn't make the concept any less gross.

The fact is that too many young male athletes are taught to see women as the spoils of being a jock.

Liz Feldman! Break out your blue blaze, gay sword, and cranberry vodka cocktail!

That's subjective. The only thing getting "worse" in my opinion is the pearl clutching that goes on when an adult woman wears whatever the hell she wants (and it's not just from conservatives...there are plenty of liberals who think that wearing certain outfits perpetuates the patriarchy, body dismorphia, etc.).

I was going to include Janet's hand-bra photo too, but it was from 1993, so it was only twenty years ago...you know, one year after Miley Cyrus was born. Miley Cyrus, who invented the trend of female pop stars barely wearing any clothes, right, Katy?

Know what current trend I can't stand? The one that pits women against each other all the freakin' time.

the current trend of female pop singers wearing not very many clothes

She might think that, but she can probably be convinced otherwise. My boyfriend is four years younger than me (five, if you go by our graduation years). I didn't take him seriously for the first month because I was so convinced that a younger guy (especially such a hot one) wasn't interested in anything serious.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I totally see how that would make you apprehensive about online dating.

If I can ask, why are you taking a break from dating? Do you want to, or do you think you should?
