This scenario is very far removed from internment camps. The decision to set up internment camps was influenced (strongly) by fear and anger and confusion. We had been attacked, the world was in a horrible, horrible war, and people were scared and angry.
Thank you!
Where did you see that?
There are several theories on the origin of viruses. Since viruses are manufactured by cell machinery, it could be that the first viruses were just accidents . . . a cell got its own DNA scrambled in just such a way that it started churning out chunks of DNA wrapped in protein. In that case, LUCA was the ancestor of…
In terms of gene-swapping between unlike organisms, or one organism absorbing another as an organelle or some such thing, the LUCA could well have multiple divergent "ancestors" . . ..
Excitingly enough, we DO have examples of some living things that don't conform to that, because scientists have been doing some tinkering.
It's *much* easier to type with tongue-in-cheek than it is to talk that way.
We're pretty sure, because all living things have:
Endangered species? Yes . . . if they're endangered because of something like overhunting, which can be overcome with a larger population. No, if it's because of something like habitat loss, which a larger population wouldn't really help combat (or even make worse).
Also 60 of the different chemicals present - not smoking - causes cancer. But since each of the latter is a frequent delivery mechanism for each of the former, maybe it's okay to blur that line a little.
It's wasn't a matter of who the apes chose to have mercy on, though. The implication was that a contagious human-lethal disease was rapidly spreading across the globe.
A mule is cheaper, yes, and can "refuel" using grass and water. But this doesn't panic, doesn't bite you when it's in a mood, isn't going to use up water that the soldiers can use, and isn't as bothered by things like poison gas, radiation, or a single bullet.
I probably helped one of these scams happen. I was working two jobs at the time, one of which was the night shift at a copy-and-print center. Somebody came in desperately needing to fax their bank account information to Nigeria. He had this whole story about how his brother had died, and he didn't even know he had…
Yup. Even looking at them stacked right above each other in the image, faces that I *know* are identical appear to be different shades because of what they're contrasted against.
I'm confused by these two lines:
That sucking noise is the sound of Wikipedia articles on this and related topics siphoning off all the rest of my free time tonight. Thank you, io9.
I agree. While it is a good idea to rigorously check what's already "common knowledge", this was absolutely already common knowledge among aquarists. I've heard many times that varied terrain and scenery helps fish establish territory boundaries, that fish become more aggressive the more crowded they are, and that…
Armed students who are also awake!
The arms look ridiculously small on an adult, but dinosaurs weren't born adults. Take a look at this juvenile T. rex (also puny-armed as an adult):
