Weren’t the early ones (the ones in this person’s budget) plagued with serious issues with randomly sticky and unpredictable steering on hot and cold days?

You are correct. The 1MZ in the first gen is a gem. 3.0L, closed deck design, lightweight aluminum block. Still FWD, but the car itself is a decent option.

I’m not in love with the styling, but...

You might want to do more research, because the 1984 Camry (V10) was offered with the 3SGELU (though Japan only), making as much as 160hp, and was not nearly as heavy as you say. The 2S-ELU (also JPN only), which you somehow overlooked, made the same lackluster 120hp in your Fiat powerplant. Regardless, 120hp is still

Good to know. Your opinion on all things is invalid.

I mean... even the 2.0 in the Camry made more power in 1984 in NA form... up to 160hp.

Nah, I’ll stick with my plastic POS Z06

SS > GT Perf Pack > 392, from the experiences I’ve had behind the wheel of each. Haven’t tried the TA, but can’t imagine it being a big enough improvement over the Scat Pack to bump it past the Mustang or Camaro.

They’re really not all that valuable. This one will go for a decent amount, but only because it has such low miles.

Now playing

The Lancia Beta is objectively terrible. Even a Camry would be more enjoyable than the underpowered and unreliable money pit that is the Beta.

I would rather have a Camry than an abysmal Lancia Beta.

Aww, man.. My brain is broken again.

Same way you would with a V or inline 4... crankshaft bearing caps. The bottom of most engines is entirely open and the crank just drops in. Crankshaft main bearing caps hold it in place.

True. Very hard to get consistent and reliable weights for most engines.

Hadn’t considered that. Was just thinking of a V or inline engine where you just have crankshaft bearing caps, but guess that’s not the case with a flat 4? I mean, the bottom has to be mostly open, right? But I don’t know all that much about boxers.

Fair enough. Just a bummer that a 2.0 4 cylinder weighs more than a 3.5l V6. Service weight of a 2GR (fluids and everything) is only 366lbs.

Pretty sure the block is one piece, But could be wrong, and should be lighter than an inline 4 block. Wouldn’t the heads be roughly half the length? Same goes for the valve covers.

The research I’ve done on the FA20 seems to indicate that it is about 90lbs heavier than a k24, but I can’t figure out why. The crankcase should be smaller and lighter and the combined weight of the two heads shouldn’t be that much heavier.

I would sooner paint the rear glass than use louvers

Well, the noise is likely just the direct injectors. Those are usually a little noisy at idle - especially cold idle.
