All they needed to do was update the graphics, rerecord the music and do new FMV scenes. Not sure why they had to unnecessarily complicate this.

Where I think you are wrong is thinking this is lazy when what the have done is committed to a desired theme. Lazy would be going in with a theme that is inconsistent for the sake of ease. You may not like the style, but that does not necessarily mean the developers were lazy.
