I’m a dark-skinned Desi woman, adopted by liberal white folks in the 1970s as well. Though my parents tried as much as they knew, my mom still had a white supremacist mindset in insidious ways. I still recall vividly when she saw me with a Black friend and she couldn’t tell us apart. It was wrenching.
