Fiscally, when I think about the subject hard enough, a car is two different things. First and foremost it is a “capital investment”. Second, it is a “luxury purchase”.

Let’s see if we can goad him into buying Fox News next!
Can’t say I am impressed. It’s too expensive. If I were to buy a nice boring fuel efficient car, I would be looking at the Corolla Hybrid for about $7,000 less. The CR-V just doesn’t offer anything that I need to justify the price.
Years ago, when the Trump Limo came up in a prior jalopnik article, I put forward that Donald Trump is in fact the greatest Jalop to have ever lived, and even as detestable as the idea may be I continue to hold that idea is true.
Don’t forget the Dodge Dart Swinger!
24mpg on the highway is bad. And nobody drives 55mph on flat straight roads for any appreciable length of time.
I heard those rumors too, but I think that idea was canned too. The S650 is going to be largely just an improved S550 chassis.
Even a sedan is a bit overkill. A 3 door hatchback would be perfectly adequate. Not that they sell those anymore.
LOL
I am fortunate to live in an area where there is half-assed bus service. The route to my work is a single bus line with no transfers. It would take about 50 minutes to get to work using it, vs 20 minutes with a car. And the grocery store is a little less than a 3/4 mile trip. And there is a little shopping and a few…
NPR’s Greg Rosalsky is currently facing this issue as he searches for a vehicle after his truck was stolen.
This is like seeing someone shopping for a single-family home in a bonkers real-estate market, and advising them, “Well, obviously if those three-bedroom homes with a yard are too expensive you should just buy a one-bedroom condo… because it will be cheaper!”
The one major flaw noted in the ad is a malfunctioning convertible top, for which the seller has deducted $1,000 from their asking price.
The cloth used in those tops is shockingly tough. I remember that from my Miata days.
That would definitely be an outlier.
Ah, I see what you meant now.
True, but non hybrids get not great city mileage. In the case of your Golf I looked it up and it gets about 25 mpg city. Which isn’t bad, but not great. That’s why I have been considering a hybrid lately. It would be nice to basically get highway mileage while commuting.
I’m pretty sure that’s because almost al PHEV’s mostly prioritize the EV only range for daily commuting.
I don’t know, these days 37mpg is a little on the weak side. Maybe it’s good for a hybrid, but I would be hard pressed to pick this over a Toyota Corolla sedan Hybrid (53/52 mpg $24k), or a Prius (54/50 mpg, $25k), or a Hyundai Elantra Blue (53/56 mpg, $23.5k). All of which are priced reasonably. If I felt a little…
I am going to add to what Mr Krhodes1 said with a little anecdotal evidence. I work at a factory in Dallas that is in an industrial district of one of the larger Dallas suburbs. I rarely have to go into the core.
