Machines do very specific, targeted enhancements. Free weights tend to hit a broader muscle group, but really, barbell exercises do more for your body than free weights as they (tend to) require more to complete. I’m a huge advocate of the barbell training method with a few free weight accessory lifts and some cardio.

Jogging outdoors (or at least not a treadmill) is generally better for you, but there are certainly reasons to use treadmills besides maximal training (granted, how good is a training if you don’t do it because you hate it?)
