HHe probably was afraid of losing those readers who get mad at unhappy or ambiguous endings. His other problem is that he usually just CANNOT resist tacking on a pointless epilogue where the surviving characters act like a book club discussing the novel we just read.

Yrah Id venture to guess that considering the endings of all the other Bachman Books. Still can’t retry Roadwork, too depressing and none of the usual genre trappings that make that sort of thing go down smoother.

Swe, I feel differently each time I read the book. One time my interpretation was that he was too insane to stop and would eventually collapse and die, and another time it felt like he was already dead.

I first read this in the Bachman Books omnibus when I was 12 in 1999. I’ve reread it three times since. Wonderful little novel, and I always have a different perspective on the events as I grow older. The ending always seems different despite containing the same words.
