But the ECU has to see a somewhat sustained amount of knock before it will retard timing, since it has no idea what octane fuel you put in the tank.  Best case, pulled timing, a bit less performance and mpg until it relaxes back to default timing map.  Worst case, engine damage. …

I think it really depends on the car. On a VW/Audi (maybe most euro cars?) the wipers live down hidden under the cowl.  You can’t snap-smack them to clear ice.
