Well, Bernie did actually spend quite a bit of his life working for equal rights for women and minorities. It was my understanding that he was an independent mainly because he hates all the BS tied to working in a party and standing in line with party lines you disagree with.

Agreed. As a raised Catholic, I remember our priest used to love cigars...but it was okay, cause the priest liked them. We were a twice a year family at one point, but we still were very firm a bout being super against atheists and my dad would say those people go to hell. Good times!
